A Letter That Says Everything: Dementia Care Foundation Honors Darash Ahava Facilitator Lavanya Krishnakumar

In a field where the work is often invisible and the victories rarely make headlines, Lavanya Krishnakumar received something rare: a formal letter of recognition and gratitude from the Dementia Care Foundation in Chennai, India, acknowledging the profound impact her Brushstrokes of Emotion® sessions have had on the patients in their care.

Krishnakumar is one of the Darash Ahava Foundation's most experienced program facilitators, bringing the organization's guided healing methodology into some of the most emotionally complex environments imaginable. Her work spans a remarkable range of populations: children living with chronic illness and their caregivers, hospital staff, girls in shelter homes, women navigating difficult life transitions, the elderly, and both underprivileged and privileged communities across Chennai.

What she has found across all of them is the same thing.

"Everyone has a story waiting to be told," Krishnakumar says, "and they often struggle with finding the words to capture what they're feeling. That's when the marks, lines, strokes, colors, textures, folds, and layers step in seamlessly."

Her sessions with dementia patients at the Dementia Care Foundation became a quiet demonstration of something the broader medical community is only beginning to understand: that creative expression can reach people in ways that clinical intervention alone cannot. For patients whose ability to communicate through language has diminished, paint and imagery become a different kind of voice.

The formal letter from the Dementia Care Foundation acknowledged not only the quality of Krishnakumar's facilitation but the tangible difference her sessions made in the emotional lives of their patients. It represents one of the first formal recognitions the Darash Ahava Foundation has received from a partner organization.
